The Adventures of Erin Berry

Montana

In 2022, my second season in Glacier, I was awarded the 'hiker of the year' award and was the first-ever female in the organization to complete over 500 miles. My total mileage for the summer was 615.

After hiking all day, my friends and I finally reached the parking lot. After hearing some exclamations from the people around us, we turned around to see we were being followed by a mama grizzly and her two cubs.

This peak is one of the largest cliff faces in the united states, next to half dome in Yosemite. This is probably the most intimidating and technical trail I have ever completed. We even saw a grizzly on the way down.

We expected this to be a calm hike to a lake, but 21 miles later we had a story to tell. We encountered a mama grizzly and two cubs, a large and fast river crossing, a mountain lion, and snow at higher elevations.

Because it is one of the most popular trails in Glacier, I decided I had to do more. I also completed ptarmigan tunnel and cracker lake for a total of 30 miles in one day.

A friend and I decided one day during work that as soon as our shift ended we would run up mount brown. This trail is the most strenuous in the park and we ended up encountaring a hail storm at the peak.

As my last trail before leaving Montana, I wanted to make it special. This trail was 28 miles, gained over 6,000 feet in elevation, and went over three mountain passes. At the final pass, I ended up getting stuck thanks to this mountain goat who refused to leave the trail.

One of my favorite places to spend a long weekend is Zion's. There are still a long list of trails I have on my list to complete like the narrows.

Despite living so close to Moab, I finally took the time to visit arches this summer and it did not disappoint. My favorite trail includes some route-finding and rock scrambling.

Just 15 minutes away from my college apartment, I enjoy exploring this trail year round to see it change. Recently, I ended up having to turn around after being stalked by a mountain lion.

Despite being terrified of heights, I set a goal to summit 50 peaks. I enjoy pushing past my wall of fear and seeing the world from a different perspective.

Other Places

Most people might have spent their spring break in Vegas, my friends and I made sure to get out of the city to experience this vast dessert, despite the high wind advisory.

This trail blew me away with every step. I could have stayed on this trail forever. I was originally planning on taking this trip by myself, but thankfully my mom and grandma decided to join my travels.

While on a spontaneous road trip through the pacific northwest, we saw signs for a waterfall and decided we needed a detour. Thankfully we did because this image is now the wallpaper on my phone. During this trip, we also explored Olympic National Park.

After spending a day in the grand canyon, I have been intrigued by the idea of one day running rim to rim. Last year I had scheduled to complete it, but an injury stopped me just weeks before.
